WHAT TO VISIT IN ANNAPOLIS AND CHESAPEAKE BAY

Annapolis, Maryland's current and colonial capital, is a splendid destination. The city keeps many of its colonial traits and is highly popular as its often crowded streets attest.

Buildings like Maryland State House, Old Senate Chamber, Mammond-Harwood House, William Paca House or Old Treasury Building are highly popular. The Banneker-Douglass Museum allows a powerful plunge into Maryland's history, while the US Naval Academy campus gives an appealing look on current and historic naval life.

St Michaels, around fifty miles from Annapolis, on the western opposite margin of the Cheasapeake bay, is the other major Chesapeake travel destination. Its seafood restaurants are highly revered, as well as its many almost intact colonial streets.

Solomons Island, sixty miles south of Annapolis, offers the Calvert Marine Museum, with its shows of marine life (and the agreeable May-October hour-long cruises on the Cheasapeake Bay).

St Mary's City (a fine reconstruction of  the old colonial city) is another interesting travel destination, just a few miles south of Solomon's Island.

Other interesting towns in the Cheasapeake Bay, deserving of your visit: Oxford (just six miles south St Michaels), Tilghman Island (west of St Michaels), Chestertown (a beautiful and rather untouched colonial port).

WHEN NOT TO GO TO ANNAPOLIS AND CHESAPEAKE BAY, MARYLAND

To avoid the risk of disagreeable weather conditions, avoid the most extreme weather periods: the sometimes hot and humid July-August (unless you enjoy water-sport activities) period and the December-February cold period.

HOTELS AND FLIGHTS TO FREDERICK AND WESTERN MARYLAND

Baltimore-Washington International Airport (BWI), ten miles south of downtown Baltimore and 25 miles northeast of Washington, is the great air hub to western Maryland.

Annapolis and St. Michaels have a reasonable accommodation offer, though mostly in mid-range prices and, in the case of St Michaels out of weekends (book early, in the case of St Michaels). Solomons Island has a limited offer.
