Santa Cruz is essentially a beach town, surrounded by the sea and beautiful mountains. Though the most popular beach is the one next to the Santa Cruz boardwalk, the quieter ones are Capitola, New Brighton and other small beaches a couple of miles out of town.
BEST TIME TO TRAVEL TO SANTA CRUZ
Summer is the high travel period in Santa Cruz, and unless you book your hotel rooms well ahead, you will not get any good accommodation.
If you're willing to take some risks you may consider May and early June, or the early and mid Autumn to travel to Santa Cruz. These periods are usually good ones, with less people and a relaxed pace (and with considerable hotel discounts).
WHEN NOT TO GO TO SANTA CRUZ
If you want less crowds and lower prices in accommodation and other services, then do not choose the summer. Instead, choose March, April and May, or October. If you want less packed periods, avoid the major holidays aswell.
If you want to avoid especially packed days, weeks and weekends, then do not travel to Santa Cruz in the major holidays and weekends. Thanksgiving, Presidents' Day weekend (February), Easter week, Memorial Day weekend (end of May), the Fourth of July, Labour Day weekend (September), Christmas, New Year's, and other holidays, are packed times.
